WP Engine vs Kinsta Hosting Comparison Tool

WP Engine and Kinsta are two prominent managed WordPress hosts aimed at customers who want more provider involvement than low-cost shared hosting normally offers. Billing cadence can distort this comparison. Kinsta publishes both a monthly rate and an annual one, while WP Engine advertises a per-month figure for annual billing. Using the advertised annual-billing figures, the standard entry-plan amounts are $350 for Kinsta and a calculated $360 for WP Engine’s first year, before taxes, overages and temporary credits. The figures below were read from each provider’s own pricing page on 23 July 2026. The calculator above uses the same numbers and lets you change any of them.

Key takeaways

  • On annual billing the entry plans are $10 apart. Kinsta bills $350 a year and WP Engine advertises $30 a month, which calculates to $360.
  • Kinsta’s visit-based entry plan allows 35,000 visits against WP Engine’s 25,000 at the same storage.
  • WP Engine lists additional sites at $20 per month and Kinsta lists them at $30 per month. Plan upgrades and included-site allowances can still change which option costs less.
  • WP Engine advertises first-year pricing for new Essential customers and says renewal pricing is subject to change.
  • Kinsta includes unlimited managed migrations. WP Engine provides an automated migration plugin.

The short answer

Choose WP Engine if you plan to use Professional or a higher tier and need phone support, if its included-site allowances fit your portfolio, or if you want a path to isolated infrastructure without changing providers.

Choose Kinsta if you want more visit headroom at the entry price, if migrations matter to you, or if you prefer having migrations handled by the provider rather than using a self-service migration plugin.

Entry plan pricing compared

Comparing Kinsta’s monthly price against WP Engine’s annual price makes Kinsta look considerably more expensive than it is.

Kinsta offers parallel visit-based and bandwidth-based versions at the same price. The Single 35k plan is measured by monthly visits, while the Single 20GB plan is measured by server bandwidth. They are alternative billing models, not two allowances included together.

Entry plan pricing and limits for WP Engine and Kinsta
Entry planWP Engine StartupKinsta Single 35k or Single 20GB
Advertised rate$30 per month on annual billing$35 monthly, or $30 per month equivalent on annual billing
Annual chargeNot published as an annual total$350 billed annually

CDN bandwidthIncluded through its global CDN; no separate CDN allowance shown125 GB on either billing version

Kinsta’s $350 annual charge is not simply twelve times the displayed monthly figure, which is rounded. That is why the calculator uses the exact annual amount rather than multiplying the rounded rate.

How the tiers scale

Above the entry tier the two ranges diverge in shape. WP Engine moves in four Essential steps then jumps to Core. Kinsta splits its range into single-site plans and multi-site plans, so the right comparison depends on how many sites you run.

The Kinsta rows below use the visit-based versions. Equivalent bandwidth-based versions are offered at the same prices but use server bandwidth rather than monthly visits as the billing metric.

Plan tiers and annual billing rates for both providers
PlanAnnual billing rateSitesVisitsStorage
WP Engine Startup$30 per month125,00010 GB
WP Engine Professional$55 per month375,00015 GB
WP Engine Growth$109 per month10100,00020 GB
WP Engine Scale$276 per month30400,00050 GB
Kinsta Single$350 per year135,00010 GB
Kinsta WP 2$700 per year270,00020 GB
Kinsta WP 5$1,150 per year5125,00030 GB
Kinsta WP 10$2,250 per year10315,00040 GB

At ten sites the comparison is instructive. WP Engine Growth is $109 a month with 100,000 visits, while Kinsta WP 10 is $2,250 a year with 315,000 visits and twice the storage.

Those plans are not equivalent, which is the general problem with tier-to-tier comparisons. Match on the constraint that actually binds you, whether that is sites, visits or storage.

The renewal question

WP Engine’s pricing page states that its advertised Essential rates apply to the first year for new customers and that renewal pricing is subject to change. It does not publish the renewal figure.

That matters more than a small signup-price difference. In a three-year comparison, 24 of the 36 months occur after the first-year WP Engine rate expires.

This is why the calculator asks for a renewal assumption before it will compare periods longer than twelve months. Declaring a three-year winner using a first-year rate for all three years would be misleading.

Kinsta does not label its published annual charge as a first-year-only rate, so the calculator carries that amount forward unless you enter a different renewal assumption. Provider pricing can still change.

What you get beyond the plan

Both include staging environments, SSL, CDN or edge delivery, daily backups and managed security features.

Automated plugin and theme updates are separate from those baseline features. WP Engine lists them as an optional add-on on Essential plans, while Kinsta Automatic Updates costs $3 per environment each month.

Kinsta includes unlimited migrations handled by its team, free malware removal, a built-in application performance monitoring tool and unlimited users. Kinsta’s pricing and uptime documentation currently describe its SLA differently, so confirm the uptime commitment that applies to your plan before purchasing.

WP Engine includes an automated migration plugin, a local development tool, transferable sites for client handoff and its EverCache system. Phone support is available from the Professional tier upward.

Kinsta’s add-on list is worth reading before committing. Redis caching is $100 per site each month and hourly backups are also $100 per site each month, so a performance-tuned setup can cost considerably more than the plan price.

Watch the limits, not just the price

Kinsta counts a visit as each unique IP address arriving within a 24-hour period. Definitions vary between hosts, so a like-for-like visit comparison needs care.

For ordinary visit and CDN overages, Kinsta states that it keeps sites running and applies overage charges, with notifications at 80% and 100% of usage.

Its documentation also reserves additional action for extreme overages, so review the current overage terms if your traffic is unusually volatile.

Storage can become a binding constraint on media-heavy sites. Both entry options include 10 GB, and Kinsta sells additional disk space at $20 per 20 GB each month.

If managed WordPress is not settled yet, work through the shared vs VPS vs dedicated comparison first. A self-managed server may have a lower hosting bill, but it also transfers maintenance, security and administration work to you.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, WP Engine or Kinsta?

At the entry tier on annual billing they are $10 apart. Kinsta bills $350 a year and WP Engine advertises $30 a month, which calculates to $360 for twelve months.

The answer changes once you add sites, because WP Engine charges $20 for an extra site and Kinsta charges $30. It changes again at renewal, since WP Engine’s advertised rate applies to the first year for new Essential customers.

Why do other comparisons say Kinsta is much more expensive?

One possible reason is that a comparison uses Kinsta’s monthly rate alongside WP Engine’s annual-billing rate. Kinsta’s month-to-month figure is higher than its annual-billing equivalent, so mixing the two billing cadences exaggerates the difference.

Does Kinsta really cost $350 rather than $360 a year?

Yes. The $30 monthly figure is a rounded equivalent, while $350 is the amount actually billed for twelve months. The calculator uses the exact annual charge for that reason.

Which has better support?

It depends on the channel you want. Kinsta offers 24/7 chat in eight languages on all listed plans. WP Engine offers chat on every plan and adds phone support from the Professional tier upward, so its Startup tier is chat-only.

What happens if I exceed my visit limit?

For ordinary visit overages, Kinsta states that it keeps sites running, sends usage notifications and charges for the excess visits. Its documentation allows additional action in extreme-overage situations. Check the current terms for each provider before assuming how your account will be handled.

Are these prices still current?

They were read from each provider’s own pricing page on 23 July 2026 and are reviewed quarterly. Managed WordPress pricing moves, so confirm the current rate at checkout before committing.
