General Hosting Questions

Understanding web hosting

What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a service that stores your website’s files, databases, and content on a server that is connected to the internet. When someone types your domain name into a browser, their computer connects to that server and loads your site. Without hosting, your website has nowhere to live online.

What does a web hosting service do?

A web hosting service provides the server infrastructure, storage space, bandwidth, and technical support needed to keep your website accessible online 24/7. Most hosting services also include features like email accounts, SSL certificates, control panels, and database management tools.

What is the difference between web hosting and a domain name?

Your domain name is your website’s address (like example.com). Web hosting is where your website actually lives. You need both. Think of it this way: the domain is your street address, and the hosting is the building at that address. They are separate services, and many people purchase them from different providers.

How does web hosting work?

When you sign up for hosting, you get space on a server to upload your website files. Your domain name is then pointed to that server using DNS records. When a visitor types your domain into their browser, the DNS system directs them to your server, which sends back your website files and displays them in the browser.

What are the different types of web hosting?

The main types are shared hosting (multiple sites share one server, lowest cost), VPS hosting (virtualized private environment, more power and control), dedicated hosting (an entire server to yourself), cloud hosting (resources spread across multiple servers for flexibility and uptime), and managed hosting (the host handles technical management for you). Each suits a different stage of website growth and budget.

What is shared web hosting?

Shared hosting means your website shares a server with many other websites. Resources like memory, CPU, and bandwidth are divided among all accounts on that server. It is the most affordable option and works well for small or low-traffic sites, but it can result in slower speeds if other sites on the same server use too many resources.

What is the difference between shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting?

Shared hosting is the entry level, where many sites share the same server and its resources. VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting gives you a dedicated portion of a server’s resources in a virtualized environment, offering more power and control without the full cost of a dedicated server. Dedicated hosting means you have an entire physical server to yourself, which offers maximum performance, security, and customization, and is best suited for high-traffic or resource-intensive sites.

What is cloud hosting?

Cloud hosting spreads your website across a network of interconnected servers rather than a single machine. This means if one server has an issue, another picks up the load, which improves uptime and reliability. Cloud hosting also scales easily, letting you add resources on demand without migrating to a new server.

What is managed web hosting?

Managed hosting means the hosting provider handles the technical maintenance of your server environment, including updates, security patches, backups, and performance monitoring. It costs more than unmanaged hosting but saves you significant time and reduces the risk of technical issues going unnoticed.

How much does web hosting cost?

Costs vary widely depending on the type of hosting. Shared hosting typically ranges from $2 to $15 per month. VPS hosting runs from $20 to $100 per month. Dedicated servers can cost $80 to $500 or more per month. Managed hosting adds a premium on top of those base costs. Keep in mind that many providers advertise introductory rates that renew at a much higher price, so always check the renewal rate before committing.

Are free web hosting services worth it?

Free hosting can work for very basic personal projects or testing, but it comes with significant limitations including ads on your site, limited storage and bandwidth, no custom domain, poor performance, and minimal support. For any business or professional site, paid hosting is worth the investment. The cost of reliable shared hosting is low enough that free hosting is rarely a good tradeoff.

What is DNS and how does it relate to web hosting?

DNS (Domain Name System) is the system that translates your domain name into the IP address of your hosting server. When you set up hosting, you point your domain’s nameservers or DNS records to your host. This tells the internet where to find your site. DNS changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours to fully propagate across the internet.

How do I choose the right web hosting service?

Start by assessing your needs: how much traffic do you expect, what platform are you using (WordPress, custom, etc.), what is your budget, and how technical are you? For most small to medium business sites, a quality shared or managed WordPress host is sufficient. Look for providers with strong uptime records (99.9% or better), responsive support, transparent pricing, and good server locations relative to your audience.

What should I look for in a web hosting provider?

Key things to evaluate include uptime guarantees and track record, server speed and location, quality of customer support (availability and response time), backup policies, security features (SSL, firewalls, malware scanning), scalability options, and honest pricing including renewal rates. Avoid choosing a host based solely on the lowest introductory price.

Can I switch web hosting providers?

Yes. Switching hosts is very common and completely doable. The process involves backing up your site, migrating your files and database to the new host, updating your DNS records to point to the new server, and verifying everything works before cancelling the old account. Done properly, it can be completed with little to no downtime. Many hosts offer free migration assistance.

Why does web hosting speed matter?

Your hosting environment is one of the biggest factors in how fast your website loads. A slow server means slow page loads, which directly impacts user experience, bounce rates, and search engine rankings. Google uses page speed as a ranking signal, so a sluggish host can hurt your SEO regardless of how well the rest of your site is optimized.

Is WordPress hosting different from regular hosting?

WordPress hosting is regular hosting that has been optimized specifically for WordPress. This often includes pre-installed WordPress, caching configured for WordPress, automatic core updates, and support staff trained in WordPress issues. It is not strictly necessary to use WordPress-specific hosting, but it can simplify setup and improve performance for WordPress sites.

Questions about our hosting services

What hosting services do you offer?

Mendy Perlman and his team offer hands-on hosting services including website migration, performance optimization, security auditing and hardening, DNS and domain management, backup setup and recovery, uptime monitoring and ongoing maintenance, and hosting consulting.

Who do you work with?

We work primarily with small to mid-size businesses across the US that need reliable, professional hosting help without a full-time IT department. Most clients come to us for a specific problem (like a slow site or a failed migration) and many stay on for ongoing maintenance and support.

Can you migrate my website to a new host?

Yes, website migration is one of our most requested services. We handle the full process including file and database migration, DNS transfer, email migration, SSL setup on the new host, and post-migration testing. Our goal is zero downtime throughout the process.

Do you work with any hosting provider or only specific ones?

We are not tied to any specific hosting provider. We work with whichever host best fits your needs and budget. If you already have a host you are happy with, we can work within that environment. If you need a recommendation, we can help you find the right fit based on your site’s requirements.

How do I get started or request a service?

The easiest way is to send an email to support@webhostingservices.co describing your situation. There are no forms or ticketing systems. Just describe what you need and we will follow up, usually within one business day.

Are you available for on-site visits?

Yes. Mendy is based in Los Angeles and available for on-site visits anywhere in the Southern California area. Most hosting work can be handled remotely, but on-site support is available when needed.

Do you offer ongoing hosting management?

Yes. Beyond one-time projects, we offer ongoing hosting management including uptime monitoring, software and plugin updates, server health checks, backup management, and general hosting support. This is a good fit for businesses that want someone keeping an eye on things without hiring in-house.

My site was hacked or infected with malware. Can you help?

Yes. We handle malware removal and post-infection cleanup, along with security hardening to reduce the risk of reinfection. If your site has been compromised, reach out as soon as possible. The sooner it is addressed, the less damage it can do to your site’s reputation and search rankings.

Can you help me choose the right hosting plan for my business?

Absolutely. Hosting consulting is one of our core services. We review your site’s traffic, platform, performance requirements, and budget, then recommend the hosting environment that makes the most sense. Where affiliate relationships exist, they are always disclosed. Our recommendations are based on genuine merit, not commission rates.

How is this site funded if you do not sell hosting directly?

The educational content on this site is supported by a combination of our professional services and affiliate relationships with hosting providers. When affiliate links are used, they are always disclosed. Affiliate relationships do not influence our recommendations. If we link to a host, it is because we think it is genuinely a good option, not because of the commission.
