• That leaves roughly 1.27 billion sites inactive, parked or idle.
• Active sites are outnumbered by inactive ones by nearly 6 to 1.

• Monthly survey figures swing widely, from large gains to occasional losses.

The daily growth rate sounds explosive but mirrors the total-versus-active gap. Most sites captured in the survey are parked or machine-generated, so the count of genuinely new, content-bearing websites is a fraction of the headline number.

The roughly 102-sites-per-computer ratio shows how many hostnames and sites share web-facing infrastructure. It should not be treated as a direct shared-hosting market-share figure, because Netcraft’s public survey does not classify each site by hosting product type. Which web servers power the most websites?

Note: server share differs by methodology. Netcraft reports several views, including all sites, active sites, top million sites, domains and web-facing computers, while W3Techs uses its own website-technology survey methodology and counts only websites whose web server it knows.

• By Netcraft’s all-site count, nginx leads at about 21%.
• Cloudflare follows near 16.2% and had the largest monthly all-site gain in Netcraft’s June 2026 survey.
• Apache sits around 11.6% in Netcraft’s all-site view.
• Google ranks next at about 5.4%, with OpenResty nearly level at roughly 5.4% after a sharp one-month drop.
• W3Techs ranks web servers differently under its own methodology, currently showing Nginx, Cloudflare Server, Apache and LiteSpeed much higher than Netcraft’s all-site shares.
