Research highlights: Shopify’s main plans run from $29 per month (Basic, billed annually) to $299 per month (Advanced), with a $5 Starter plan for social selling and Shopify Plus from $2,300 per month on a 3-year term. The subscription is only one part of the cost. Standard online card rates on Basic, Grow, and Advanced run from 2.5% to 2.9% plus $0.30 per sale, while app subscriptions, payment processing, premium themes, and third-party transaction fees can add materially to the total cost. Using Shopify Payments waives Shopify’s extra third-party transaction fee.
What are the Shopify plan pricing tiers?
- Shopify’s Starter plan is $5 per month, built for selling through social media and links rather than a full storefront.
- Basic costs $29 per month on annual billing, or $39 month to month.
- Grow, formerly named Shopify, runs $79 per month annually or $105 monthly.
- Advanced is $299 per month annually or $399 monthly, and annual billing saves about 25% across these plans.
- Every plan includes hosting, an SSL certificate, unlimited products, and unlimited bandwidth at no extra charge.
Plan | Annual (per month) | Monthly | Best for |
Starter | $5 | $5 | Social and link selling |
Basic | $29 | $39 | New stores |
Grow | $79 | $105 | Scaling stores |
Advanced | $299 | $399 | High-volume stores |
Plus | ~$2,300 | Custom | Enterprise |
Shopify also runs a 3-day free trial followed by a promotional $1 per month for the first three months on Basic, Grow, and Advanced. That offer lowers the entry cost, but the standard rate is what matters for long-term budgeting.

What percentage does Shopify take per sale?
- Shopify charges no separate sales commission. When you use Shopify Payments, what Shopify takes is the card processing rate.
- That online card rate is 2.9% plus $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% plus $0.30 on Grow, and 2.5% plus $0.30 on Advanced.
- Shopify Plus carries Shopify’s lowest published card rates, listed from 2.25% plus $0.30 on Shopify’s U.S. pricing page, though Plus card rates vary by country and contract.
- On a $100 online sale, that works out to about $3.20 on Basic, $3.00 on Grow, and $2.80 on Advanced.
- In-person sales through Shopify POS are cheaper, ranging from 2.6% plus $0.10 down to 2.4% plus $0.10.
Plan | Online card rate | Fee on a $100 sale |
Basic | 2.9% + $0.30 | $3.20 |
Grow | 2.7% + $0.30 | $3.00 |
Advanced | 2.5% + $0.30 | $2.80 |
Plus | From 2.25% + $0.30 | From ~$2.55 |
Higher plans lower the rate, so the per-sale cut shrinks as you scale. The difference between Basic and Advanced is 0.4 percentage points of the order amount, which becomes real money once monthly sales volume climbs into the thousands of orders.

How much are Shopify transaction and payment processing fees?
- Using Shopify Payments waives Shopify’s transaction fee entirely, so you pay only the card processing rate for your plan.
- Using a third-party gateway like PayPal or Stripe triggers an extra Shopify surcharge on top of the gateway’s own fee.
- That surcharge is 2.0% on Basic, 1.0% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, and 0.2% on Plus.
- On a $100 sale, Basic plus an outside gateway can cost about $5.20 versus $3.20 on Shopify Payments.
- For most merchants, Shopify Payments is the cheaper route because it removes the surcharge completely.
Plan | Extra Shopify transaction fee with Shopify Payments | Third-party gateway surcharge |
Basic | 0% (waived) | 2.0% |
Grow | 0% (waived) | 1.0% |
Advanced | 0% (waived) | 0.6% |
Plus | 0% (waived) | 0.2% |
The surcharge is the fee most merchants overlook. At higher sales volume it can exceed the plan fee itself, which is why Shopify steers stores toward its own payment system.
How much do Shopify apps and themes cost?
- Shopify offers more than 20 free themes, including Dawn and Horizon, that are enough to launch a clean store.
- Premium themes on the official Shopify Theme Store are usually a one-time purchase of roughly $100 to $420, not a recurring fee.
- Third-party theme marketplaces sell themes cheaper, often $39 to $89, with more variable quality.
- Apps range from free to about $9 to $99 per month each, and a working stack often totals $50 to $300 per month.
- App subscriptions, not themes, are usually the larger long-term add-on cost.
Add-on | Typical cost |
Free theme | $0 |
Premium theme (official) | ~$100 to $420 once |
Third-party theme | $39 to $89 once |
App subscriptions | $50 to $300 / mo |
A theme is a one-time line, but apps recur every month. Audit your app stack regularly, since features bundled into a good premium theme can replace several paid apps and lower your monthly bill.
How much does Shopify Plus cost?
- Shopify Plus starts at $2,500 per month on a 1-year term or $2,300 per month on a 3-year term for standard setups, with custom pricing possible for more complex businesses.
- For more complex or higher-volume businesses, Shopify says Plus may switch to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model; Shopify does not publish one universal threshold or rate.
- Plus carries Shopify’s lowest published standard card rates, listed from 2.25% plus $0.30 on Shopify’s U.S. pricing page, plus a 0.2% third-party transaction fee when Shopify Payments is not used.
- It is built for high-volume, high-growth, or more complex businesses that need enterprise features, advanced checkout control, B2B capabilities, expansion stores, or custom integrations.
Shopify Plus detail | Figure |
Starting price | ~$2,300 / mo |
1-year term | $2,500 / mo |
3-year term | $2,300 / mo |
Variable platform fee | May apply for complex or higher-volume businesses; confirmed with Shopify Plus sales |
Online processing rate | From 2.25% + $0.30; varies by country and contract |
Plus makes financial sense once enterprise features, lower published card rates, and custom contract terms outweigh the jump in monthly fee. Stores that do not need Plus-only features can often stay on Advanced at a much lower platform fee.
What is the total cost to sell on Shopify?
- Total cost combines four parts: the plan fee, payment processing, app subscriptions, and a theme.
- The subscription is rarely the biggest line, since processing and apps usually exceed the plan fee for active stores.
- A Basic store doing $30,000 a month pays roughly $29 to $39 for the plan plus at least about $870 in online card processing before the fixed $0.30 per-transaction fees are added.
- Add a typical app stack of $50 to $300 per month and the all-in cost lands near $950 to $1,200+ before the fixed per-transaction fees, with the final total depending on order count.
- A one-time official premium theme of about $100 to $420 can sit on top of that, paid once rather than monthly.
Cost component | Typical monthly (Basic, $30K sales) |
Plan fee | $29 to $39 |
Payment processing | ~$870 + $0.30 per online transaction |
App subscriptions | $50 to $300 |
Theme (one-time) | ~$100 to $420 once |
The headline plan price is the smallest piece of running a store. Model processing and apps against your real sales volume before you choose a plan. For how this compares to a self-hosted store, see our WooCommerce cost research.
